The purpose of this site is to give beginners and parents an idea of what wrestling is and all that it entails. Below is a link to amateur wrestling news. It is updated daily on collegiate and high school wrestling.
History of wrestling
Wrestling is considered one of the oldest competitive sports. This competitive sport was listed as an event in the first Olympic games recorded (776 B.C.). Greek wrestling was originally called "Pale." At this time two opponents would grapple until one had so many points or the other admitted defeat due to pain or fear. Wrestlers would get points for throwing his opponent on their back, pushing him out of bounds, or forced submission. Three points was all that was needed to win. Since then wrestling has become more organized. People on every continent and almost every country participate in wrestling.
There are two forms of Olympic style wrestling: Greco-Roman and Freestyle.
Greco-Roman wrestling is upper body only. Opponents are not able to grab each other below the waist, trip, or actively use leg execution. Throwing your opponent to the mat is a way to win.
Freestyle wrestling allows leg execution for offense or defense. Freestyle wrestling allows throwing and pinning to win the match.
High School Wrestling and College Wrestling in the U.S.
Wrestling in the U.S. follows different rules. In college and high school it is considered folk style or scholastic wrestling. Unlike Greco-Roman and Freestyle, throwing is not allowed. The ultimate goal in this form of wrestling is to pin ones opponent. Like Freestyle wrestling, leg execution is allowed. Both collegiate and high school wrestling have weight classes. Weight has to be examined by a medical expert and the weight listed is the minimum weight a wrestler can wrestle at safely. The wrestler may wrestle one level up from their weight class, if they choose to go back they must follow a strict weight loss regimen so that they do not become dehydrated and they maintain a healthy diet. The college and high school season runs from October/November until March. They participate in dual meets and tournaments.
The main differences between high school and college wrestling:
-shorter lengths: three periods consisting of 2 minutes (collegiate starts with a 3 minute period)
-does not allow riding time like collegiate
